Living with a disability – What a blessing

Living with a disability – What a blessing

I have MS – Multiple Sclerosis. Since being diagnosed, the disease and my disability have both greatly progressed. I used to be a jogger. Today I use a walker or wheelchair to go anywhere. I used to drive and work 50 plus hours a week. I no longer drive or work. I used to make a very good living. Today I live on disability income. I have always been a pretty happy guy. Today, I can honestly say that I am happier than I have ever been.

President Signs the ADA Amendments Act — a Bill Reaffirming Protections for People with Disabilities

Information obtained from the Nat'l MS Society

Oct 06, 2008

The power of the Society’s MS activist network to help move public policy legislation forward was dramatically illustrated with the recent passage and signing of the ADA Amendments Act, which brings millions of people back under the protection of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

When originally signed into law in 1990, the ADA made it clear that a disability need not leave an individual disabled when it came to the opportunities this country offers for a full and productive life, including workplace protections.

Cognitive impairment and structural brain damage in benign multiple sclerosis

Neurology. 2008 Sep 24. [Epub ahead of print]

Rovaris M, Riccitelli G, Judica E, Possa F, Caputo D, Ghezzi A, Bertolotto A, Capra R, Falautano M, Mattioli F, Martinelli V, Comi G, Filippi M.

OBJECTIVE: Although in benign multiple sclerosis (BMS) locomotor disability is absent or only minimal, subclinical cognitive impairment seems to occur in many cases. Diffusion tensor (DT) MRI enables us to quantify the extent of "actual" tissue damage, which goes undetected when using conventional MRI. Against this background, we investigated the extent of structural brain damage underlying cognitive dysfunction in BMS, with the ultimate aim to move a first step toward a more reliable definition of this disease phenotype.

Desert Storm Veterans with Multiple Sclerosis...

Veterans' MS study awaits Bush sign-off

The Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2008, now awaiting President Bush's signature, contains a provision to determine whether veterans of the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and of post-9/11 wars are at increased risk for multiple sclerosis.

Senate Bill 3023 passed the House last month and was sent to the White House last Thursday. If passed, a wide ranging, comprehensive study of veterans of Desert Storm, and of those in current conflicts, would be conducted to examine incidents of multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders. A final version would be due New Year's Eve, 2012.
