By Cherie C. Binns - RN, BS, MSCN
Summer 2009

We are in the midst of summer with all of the fun and challenging opportunities available to us only at this time of year. Although this has been an unusual summer for many of us due to weather pattern shifts, there are still many things you can do alone or with family that are relaxing and fun.

Keeping or staying cool in the summer months is always a feat to accomplish.

For me, 10minutes max in 90+ degree heat before my body begins to feel the life being sucked from my body.

I remember i went 23 hours away from my country by plane. I had to carry my Betafrone which gets corrupted in hot weather. But i asked the company to provide me a cooling bag with plasma ices and they did, so i could carry my medicine, during my stay in tropical 24 hours a day A.C was on to keep me cool.
Indeed life is not as difficult for an MSer to the normal things as a healthy person does.

Hot weather and MS are a bad mixture. Raising your core body temperature isn't good. Apart from that when I went to Amsterdam flying from Gatwisk(UK) the security bods checked all my meds and asked me to open a catheter. Then they took my walking stick (scanned it as they thought I was either a terrorist etc) and asked what I had done to my leg (grrr how many more times). When I said nothing is wrong with my leg and that I have MS. I'd booked assistance (a buggy) then people look at you and think 'what a lazy cow' Obviously they thought I was going to Amsterdam to sample the 'weed' as pain relief. People amaze me lol I don't smoke.

I personally find the humidity to be as bad as the heat. When I was in India a couple of years ago, the temps were in the upper 30's and lower 40'sC (over 100 F every day) and because it was so dry, it was not quite as bad as 75 with 80% humidity is here at home.

We live in the Negev desert in Israel. Leaving our town, especially in summer, is torture. We are not used to the humidity found in other places and it makes the temperature feel so much hotter.

We have a/c in our house both upstairs and down and I turn them on whenever I need them. In addition we have ceiling fans in 5 rooms that we use when the heat is up to about 28-29 deg C. Then the a/c kicks in.

Have a great rest of the summer, stay cool and feel good.
