Nova Scotia supports debated MS trials

Nova Scotia is the latest province to throw its weight behind a proposed clinical trial in Canada to administer a controversial treatment to multiple sclerosis patients.

N.S. Premier Darrell Dexter said Friday that it was joining other provinces in supporting a national randomized clinical trial of the so-called liberation treatment.

"We've said we think there needs to be leadership from the federal government on the question of national trials, and that we would participate in those trials," Dexter said, adding the trials would have to meet guidelines and include patients from across the country.

"Of course, we want to ensure we're proceeding in an appropriate and cautious manner because this is a controversial therapy, but also one that offers hope to people who are suffering from MS. If it shows promise and there's the possibility there will be benefit, we'll do our part to pursue it."
