Helping families overcome MS-related obstacles

BY BOB RAKOW Correspondent May 10, 2011

Ken Bober doesn’t want other families of individuals with multiple sclerosis to face the challenges and uncertainties he has encountered.
Bober’s daughter, Chrissy, was diagnosed with the disease of the central nervous system in 2004.
He and his wife, Debbie, quickly encountered numerous obstacles in their efforts to get Chrissy appropriate medical care.
“I have seen firsthand through my daughter the difficulties with the insurance companies,” said Bober, an Orland Park resident.
For example, an insurance provider once declined to pay for a $5,000 ankle brace prescribed for Chrissy because the device typically was used for sports injuries, and Chrissy was not an
athlete, he said.
Additionally, medicines Chrissy has taken over the years were not always covered by insurance.
“It’s been a nightmare, but we’ve gotten through it,” Bober said.
However, Bober worries that other families will not be able to overcome the barriers his family has faced the past six years.
As a result, he formed Team Chrissy, a newly created foundation designed to support people with MS and their families.
