Funding for trials of MS treatment is good news (in Canada)




It might prove to be a breakthrough; it might also be a dead end

 
Either way, it is welcome news for multiple sclerosis sufferers in this country that federal Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq has finally come around to approving government funding for clinical trials of a controversial - though potentially revolutionary - treatment for the hitherto incurable disease.

The so-called "liberation therapy" developed by Italian vascular surgeon Paolo Zamboni is perhaps no cure, but it holds the possibility of substantially alleviating the debilitating symptoms of MS, whose cause is obscure. Sufferers experience severe weakness, loss of muscle co-ordination and vision problems.

Health authorities in this country have been wary of the treatment in the absence of definitive assessments.
