Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science leads in research and discovery

Washington, July 29, 2011-At the dawn of life, as babies are born, they enter a welcoming world filled with surprises that will woo them to the exquisiteness of life.  It
was that awakening that filled men with the necessary curiosity and the innate wish to improve our lives through discovery and creation.
Thus, the embryo of Science was set in place. According to the dictionary, Science is: “The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.”

Weizmann scientists have worked on two
of the frontline treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS); and have
developed a technology used in advanced medical imaging scans. They are creating diabetes vaccines and flu vaccines, they are using stem cells to grow new organs and a potential T cells treatment to regenerate damaged spinal-cord nerves after injury, and are investigating conditions ranging from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.

Unusual Weather and Your Multiple Sclerosis

By Cherie C. Binns RN BS MSCN - July 2011

The summer of 2011 has shown us many unusual weather patterns throughout not only the United States but many parts of the World.   There have been hotter and drier (and far wetter) days than we have seen in decades.   For those of us with MS, this can pose problems if we are not careful.

In hot weather, for many of us this means anything over 70 degrees, we need to over hydrate to stay well.  Even a quarter of a degree elevation in core (inner body) temperature can cause MS symptoms to worsen (Uthoff’s Sign).   This does not mean you are having a relapse.   It means you need to cool your body down.

Free Wireless and Discounted Land Line Phone Service for Qualified Consumers

News from the MS Foundation:

If the cost of phone service is keeping you disconnected, you may be able to benefit from one of several government-supported programs that offer help to qualified consumers. The federal Universal Service Fund (USF) supports the Lifeline Assistance and Link-Up America programs. These programs provide monthly discounts to income-eligible consumers on basic telephone service charges and initial installation or activation for telephone service at the primary residence. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), with the help of the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), administers the USF.

Lifeline Assistance provides discounts on one basic monthly service at the primary residence for qualified telephone subscribers. These discounts can be up to $10.00 per month, depending on your state. Federal rules prohibit qualifying low income consumers from receiving more than one Lifeline service at the same time.
Link-Up America pays one-half (up to a maximum of $30) of the initial installation fee for one traditional, wireline telephone or the activation fee for one wireless telephone for a primary residence. It also allows participants to pay the remaining amount they owe on a deferred schedule, interest-free. Federal rules prohibit qualifying low income consumers from receiving more than one Link-Up discount at a primary residence. Qualifying consumers may be eligible for Link-Up again only after moving to a new primary residence.

The Lifeline and Link-Up programs are available to qualifying consumers in every state, territory, and commonwealth. Eligibility criteria vary by state. States that have their own Lifeline program may have their own criteria. For states that rely solely on the federal Lifeline and Link-Up program eligibility criteria, subscribers must either have an income that is at or below 135 percent of the federal poverty guidelines or participate in designated assistance programs. For more information go to www.lifeline.gov.
SafeLink Wireless® and Assurance Wireless are also part of the Lifeline program, and offer a free cell phone with a limited number of free minutes each month.  SafeLink is provided by TracFone Wireless, Inc. and Assurance Wireless is provided by Virgin Mobile USA. Eligibility requirements which vary by state also apply to the wireless programs.

For more information go to www.safelinkwireless.com or to www.assurancewireless.com. Consumers who are already receiving another Lifeline service may not qualify for a wireless program.

A Study of Ocrelizumab in People with Primary Progressive MS

..This randomized, parallel group, double-blind, placebo controlled study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of ocrelizumab in people with primary-progressive MS. Eligible patients will be randomized 2 to 1 to receive either ocrelizumab (300 mg intravenously, 2 infusions separated by 14 days in each treatment cycle) or placebo. The blinded treatment period will be at least 120 weeks, followed by open label treatment for people in both groups who, in the opinion of the investigator, could benefit from further or newly initiated ocrelizumab treatment. Anticipated time on study treatment is up to five and a half years.

For information on study locations and inclusion criteria go to www.clinicaltrials.gov and search for identifier number NCT01194570.
